The aim of the Rotary Dragon Boat Festival is to raise money for charity.
The Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper supports a broad range of projects both in the local community and internationally.
Community projects include canal Barge trips for local disabled and disadvantaged people. Every year we hire a specially adapted barge for four weeks and take different local groups for a day out on the canal. We offer transport support to the local Stroke Club; work closely with the Abingdon Bridge, South and Vale Young Carers; and taking groups of disabled local youngsters on a Rotary Kids Out Day to the Cotswold Wildlife Park.
Our international projects include a micro-credit scheme in Uganda which supports 40 groups of around 25 farmers each, we support “Action for Children in Conflict” in Kenya; and a community charity in Southern India.
The club supports The Rotary Foundation, the charitable arm of Rotary International. Worldwide, Rotarians support priorities such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Grants provided by The Rotary Foundation tackle the issues of poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition, providing sustainable solutions which have a lasting impact.
Rotary International has been working hard for over 25 years to eradicate Polio; and it is now endemic in only three countries. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is matching £2 for every £1 raised by Rotary for this project. As with all other Rotary Clubs this is one of our priorities
